Jane Austen - KICKS BUTT!!!!!

Ok, I admit it...I'm a Jane Austen fan. No red-blooded man in their life should ever have to go through the agony of hiding this secret deep inside. So, I'm coming out with it:

I like Jane Austen!!!!

I should be more precise--I like Jane Austen movies. I may have actually read one of her books when it was required reading in high school, but I'm mostly into the movie versions of her novels--especially the PBS Masterpiece versions. You may not see a lot of difference in the settings from one film to the next--in fact, it's easy to get them confused--but you will see masterful dialog and character development--the kind you just don't see too often. On top of that, my wife LOVES her writing (and the movies). I even gave her Jane Austen's complete works for Christmas this year. It's the kind of thing that we can watch together while sipping on our International Delights Coffee...I mean, our Red Bull Energy Drinks.

But being the man that I am, I've decided to spice up Miss Austen so that every testosterone oozing Neanderthal can appreciate her. Enjoy...

No one, and I mean NO ONE, is going to get me off the couch for next week's Pride & Prejudice on PBS. Three weeks in a row!!! Go Colin!! And my dh will love the graphic (he's a closet JA fan as well).

Ah. As an English major, I became very familiar with Jane Austen. I have to admit, I like the movies more than the books too.
I'd like the movies even more if she toted semi-automatic weaponry.

Get that picture out of cyberspace this instant!:-)
Actually it is funny. All the guys in this house "say" they can't stand Jane Austin, but whenever I watch any of those PBS movies guess what? I'm not alone.

Austin's got NUTHIN' on Anne of Green Gables. That gal's got spunk (and a fully automatic 9mm).

stretch mark mama - We have the Pride & Prejudice DVD. I think I bought it for Miss Sniz a few years ago for Christmas. So, you see how I work here? I buy her Jane Austen stuff and then when she's watching it, I can act like I'm all worked up about not being able to watch sports or monster trucks or competitive eating contests, but deep down inside I'd rather be watching her movie. Oh, and thanks for commenting.

scott - At some point, one of her undiscovered works will be made into a movie staring one of those steroid induced gals from professional wrestling and Stone Cold Steve Austin who will substitute an "e" for the "i" in his last name to pay tribute. Or, maybe not.

jan - You're right. They watch it because it's good and your boys have good taste.

uvulapie - Our girls are big fans of the Green gal. I get her confused with someone else when the movie version is on and keep expecting her to have a fear of eggs and ham.

I LOVE those PBS Jane Austin movies. I stumbled across them by accident and now keep looking.

I had to giggle at your gun toting Jane though lol.

Jane Austen is bad enough, but if you are watching Masterpiece Theatre on PBS, you are a tree-hugging, liberal democrat ninnypants.

Although I'm not sure what that says about me, since I worked for them for a couple of years. But at least I was getting PAID to watch sissy elitist television.

Mr. Shumway,

That "packing heat" pic was a great laugh! I have never seen any of Austen's works. Maybe I might be missing out I would say.

Your artwork and photoshop creations are fantastic.

Be well,

Randy

Jane Austin? You scare me! If my blog dads are liking Jane Austin movies, then maybe I should give them a shot. Thing is, my wife is not the biggest J.A. fan. Which movie do you recommend I start with, if I choose to watch one? Let me know on my blog...or I will check back here.

If Jane was alive to see that picture she'd wish she was dead!

Mr. E - You know, you may not like Jane Austen. If your wife likes her books and movies, it can be a neat thing to watch together. But in your case, it may be the case that you both don't care for her work.

But if I were going to recommend one to start out, I'd say either Mansfield Park (the version that aired recently on PBS Masterpiece) or the A&E version of Pride & Prejudice which is really, really, really long.

But really, really, really good. (In response to BD's last comment about the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice.)
