A Meme Response

Arby tagged me last month and I'm just now getting around to a reply. It's simple. All I have to do is repost the first post ever from my blog. Here it is...

November 29, 2006
The next time you make a trip to a restaurant or even a fast food establishment, tell the person helping you that you want your order served, "granny style" and then slip the waiter a $20 bill.
That's a typical post from me today. It sort of goes back to my pre-blog days with The Daily Journal (TDJ). TDJ was a blog long before there were blogs. So, if I want to get really specific, I could post my first entry on TDJ. I didn't write the first entry as that belonged to Jason. However, I wrote the second entry and it looked like this...
June 7, 1998
If I could be anyone in the world, I would be Miss America. Imagine all of that good will you could share with folks all over the country. Sure, they'd be staring at my breasts and trying to peek up my dress, but I'd still be spreading good will, and that's all that really matters when you're Miss America like me.
I'm supposed to pass this on, so I'll ask any of my followers to re-post their first entry as well. And just to make it fun, if you choose to do it, you need to change the subject of the post to an armadillo wearing a parka. Be sure to send me a comment if you posted. Cheers!

I Have a Scream

I continue to go through some old videos that I made a few years ago. It's nice for some of these to be seen and it's my hope that I will start making some new videos for this here blog. This particular piece was put together for The Daily Journal which was the precursor to my blog (read more about TDJ here), Uvulapie's blog and the Java Jesus blog. We're sort of like a three-piece Beatles without the big break-up, Yoko, one of us getting shot, musical talent, and all of that notoriety.

Howard Dean's Big Day or The Scream Heard 'Round the World

It was January 19, 2004 and Howard Dean, the early Democratic party front-runner for President of the United States, had just won the coveted Iowa caucus. After such a strong showing and total victory, the rest of the campaign trail would only be a formality for Dean's quest for control of the White House...

No, wait...that's not right. He got second place in the primary and was just barely nudged out by John Kerry who had virtually no shot at the nomination. In fact, there was probably something wrong with the vote counting and...

Hmmm....that's still not it. Oh, I remember. Dean was supposed to win this primary and was the favorite for the Democratic nomination (and it was a given that any Democrat would easily defeat President Bush) but he finished third--behind John Kerry and John Edwards. What follows is his "victory" (or "3rd Place") speech given to his supporters on the night of his big night. More than likely, you've all heard and/or seen this triumphant, brief speech, but I added some visual references using Microsoft's free Windows Movie Maker program and Google's image search feature.

Enjoy...

TDJ on Umbrellas - Ten Years Ago Today

A profound truth unearthed from the entries of The Daily Journal. You'd think we'd get a real handle on technology by now.

August 12, 1998
You'd think that with science as advanced as it is today, we'd develop giant umbrellas to put over cities whenever really important outdoor car part shows are going on. To think, we can put a man on the moon. Geesh.

Another TDJ

Here's another TDJ entry from ten years ago today...

July 27, 1998
I just remembered my locker combination from my senior year in high school! Isn't it amazing how our minds work like that? It was something like 22-something-something, I think. Wait, I know there was a 2 in it. It may not have been 22. Man, that's amazing.

Hey, it's Sunday and I cannot think of anything creative to come up with today. Besides, this was perfectly fine in 1998 when we had three readers. These days, I'm almost certain that I have four, sometimes five readers and only two of them used to write on TDJ.

TDJ - Ten Years Ago

Here's a TDJ entry from ten years ago today...

July 26, 1998
My church is currently between pastors for the first time in eighteen years. The guy who preached today did a pretty good job, although I'm not sure that colonic irrigation is really prescribed in the book of Philemon. At least it was a refreshing alternative to communion.

Ten Years of TDJ!!!

I cannot believe that I missed a very special anniversary last month. Sure, I'm getting ready to attend (maybe) my 20 Year High School Reunion in a month, I've been married for nearly 16 years, my wife is turning [insert number here] in a few months, but this is important! Last month was the anniversary of The Daily Journal.

The Daily Journal was a blog before blogs were even invented by Al Gore. Back in 1998 my friend Jason (of Uvulapie and His Amazing Hillbillies) started up The Daily Journal (also known as TDJ) as a way to make fun of a few of the journaling sites that we had seen online. Back in those days, you did everything in HTML or you had some annoying web editing software like FrontPage to make your pages look sassy. It was old school Internets, baby. A few days later I joined in on the fun and some time after that Scott (of Java Jesus) became a regular contributor. We carried on this exercise in futility for about 8 years (although the last two were hit and miss and at one time we even tried to convert TDJ into a blog).

The good news is that it's still there. You can go back and read the old posts any time you like. Every so often I'll post an old entry on my blog and I plan on doing that more often. Why should I waste all of that creative energy when I could just steal something from the past so I can spend more time on the Oprah Forum.

For the life of me I cannot find the entry that goes with this picture (help me, Jason), but I thought I'd share it in light of yesterday's post about grizzly bear attacks...

Jason came up with this--based on an actual graph that he only modified slightly. It's subtle and yet it still manages to hit you in the face at the same time.
